Hi,

I'm trying to install 1.2.3 or 2.0rc3 (tried both) from dvd onto a HD, in
both cases it all appears to install fine but when I attempt to boot from
the HD it fails

without touching the keyboard the 2.0 says: (1.2.3 is similiar)

error 1 lba 378986767
No /boot/loader

and then goes back to the "boot:" prompt

Is there a security setting enabled in the BIOS that might prevent
installing the bootloader on the HDD?

installing the bootloader on the HDD?
good idea but no

in addition I can get to point where it would boot and it just sits there
with a "/" sysbol in the fist char position on the bottom line.
I guess that means that something has crashed

Wait, you see a "/" symbol?

Which version of pfSense did you install? If it's the embedded version, then
the "/" is correct, the only way to access the console is by using a
null-modem cable and hyperterminal (if you use Windows) on another computer.
Then you use the other computer to see the output that's usually on the
screen and you can access the menu pfSense shows when booted up.

I've tried installing embedded, SMP and uni-processor - all the same,

I'm using pfSense-1.2.3-RELEASE-LiveCD-Installer.iso.gz or
pfSense-2.0-RC3-i386-20110621-1650.iso.gz

Okay.

Which type of install did you do, quick/easy or custom? If the 1st, try the
2nd and see how far it gets then.

I would suggest that you use dd to remove whatever is on the first block of your disk.

such as :

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/disk1 count=60

or equivalent for your OS.

after try agin the install

I do have the same symtoms but I tried that fix and it made no difference (I
tried it with both 1.2.3 and r.0rc3)

Normally that is called virus protwction in the bios. And yes that would prevent the boot loader from being installed.
